Detailed Itinerary

Cusco – KM 104 – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Early morning

  • 4:00 AM: Accommodation pick-up from Cusco & transfer to the train station.
  • Comfortable, private van – perfect to catch up on that final hour of sleep.
  • 6:10 AM or 6:40 AM: Scenic train ride to KM. 104.

Morning

  • Cross the hanging bridge and visit the Chachabamba ruins. Then, begin the steady ascent through the cloud forest, enjoying spectacular views of the Urubamba River.

Midday

  • Arrive at the stunning Wiñay Wayna ruins, often called “Baby Machu Picchu.” Here, you will enjoy a nutritious Box Lunch to refuel for the final push.

Afternoon

  • Hike the final stretch to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). This is your reward: the first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu spread out below you, a view reserved only for hikers.
  • Walk down to the upper terraces to capture the classic postcard panoramic view. Your guide will then provide an explanation of the site, explaining the history and secrets of this Wonder of the World.

Late afternoon

  • Take the bus down to Aguas Calientes. You will have a brief moment to use the restrooms or buy a snack before heading to the station.
  • 6:20 PM – 7:30 PM: Board the train back to Ollantaytambo, followed by a private van transfer to Cusco.

Evening

  • Accommodation drop-off: We drop you off directly at your accommodation door so you can rest immediately (approx. 10:30 PM – 11:00 PM).

How physically fit do I have to be for this 1 Day Inca Trail?

The treks are moderate level. They involve a bit of walking and some steep sections and require at least 1 day in Cusco to acclimatize to altitude before you begin. We always brief you in advance, and you can contact us to help choose the right tour or trek for your level.

How many people will be in my tour group?

All of our Machu Picchu treks have a maximum of 10 people for a truly personalized, authentic experience.

Is this trek a good option for solo travelers?

Yes, 100%. A great thing about our treks is that they are made up of like-minded travelers and are a great way to meet people and share the experience of Machu Picchu.

When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is accessible 365 days a year. The rainy season is in February, but you still get amazing views.

Low Season is November to February, which many travelers like, as there are smaller crowds, but really, any time is a great time to visit Machu Picchu.

Note: The Classic Inca Trail is unavailable in February; all other tours and treks operate as normal.

What should I pack for this 1 Day Inca Trail?

There are a few essentials everyone should bring:

  • Small backpack (under 20L)
  • Rain jacket or poncho (weather can change quickly)
